Welcome to Marefia Children!
Marefia Children Center is a non-governmental organization the aim of
which is to improve the living conditions of people in Addis Ababa,
the capital of Ethiopia.
Giving children and adolescents the opportunity to get an education is the key to attaining a future sustainable society. The benefit of going to school is weighed against the constant struggle for survival. That the family has enough food to survive is given a higher priority, and, therefore, the children are often forced to doing toilsome, badly paid jobs or begging.
A steady income in the household is the most important key to giving children and adolescents the possibility to go to school. Marefia Children Center concentrates its developmental work on activities that result in continuous incomes for the families: modern bee hives and the production of honey.
Each family is given one bee hive and all the necessary equipment. The women are educated at our training center and get all the essential knowledge on modern bee keeping to maintain the bee hives and produce honey. The women are also trained in entrepreneurship and are taught how to market their products. Together, the participating women have formed a sales organization through which the honey is sold.
A well functioning bee keeping generates an income that meets the need for basic goods during a whole year the result of which is that the family’s children can go to school.
Marefia Children Center also works with groups of women who are educated in women’s rights issues and the importance of stopping all harmful traditional practices.
